Moroccan Rug Size Guide: Living Room to Hallway

A rug that is too small makes a room look chopped up. A rug that is too big climbs the walls. The right size ties the furniture together and makes the space feel planned. Moroccan rugs come in many sizes because Amazigh (Berber) weavers build each piece on a hand loom, so dimensions vary from piece to piece. This Moroccan rug size guide gives you a simple rule for each room, plus a few measuring tricks that save you from returns.

These are standard design guidelines, not fixed laws. Handmade rugs rarely land on exact numbers, so expect a few inches of variation.

Living Room Rug Size

Start with the seating, not the floor. You have three layouts to choose from:

  • All legs on: Every sofa and chair leg sits on the rug. This looks the most polished and suits larger rooms. Think 9 x 12 ft.

  • Front legs on: Only the front legs of each piece touch the rug. This works in most living rooms and is the safest choice. An 8 x 10 ft rug fits here.

  • Floating: The rug sits in front of the sofa with no furniture on it. Only use this in small rooms, and keep the rug at least 5 x 8 ft.

Aim for 6 to 12 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls in a medium room. Smaller rugs, such as a 3 x 5 ft piece, belong under a coffee table or beside a chair, not as the main rug.

A thick Beni Ourain pile looks best when it anchors the whole seating area. Pick a size generous enough that the pile feels like a surface, not a patch.

Bedroom Rug Size

Bed size drives the choice. Place the rug so it extends at least 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed. That way your feet land on wool when you stand up.

  • Twin bed: a 5 x 8 ft rug placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed

  • Queen bed: an 8 x 10 ft rug under the bed, with the headboard end tucked beneath the nightstands

  • King bed: a 9 x 12 ft rug, or two matching runners on each side

Small on budget? Two runners flanking the bed deliver the same soft landing for less money. Soft pile styles like Beni Ourain and Beni Mguild feel great underfoot here.

Hallway Rug Size

Measure the hallway length first. The rug should run most of it without touching the walls or doors. Leave 4 to 6 inches of bare floor on each side, and 6 to 12 inches at each end.

Check the door swing before you buy. A thick pile can catch the bottom of a door. Flatweave styles, such as Zanafi and Taznakht, lie flat, wear well, and handle heavy foot traffic. Runners from 2.5 x 8 ft to 3 x 10 ft cover most standard hallways.

Dining Room Rug Size

Here the chairs set the rule. Pull each chair back as if someone is standing up. All four legs must stay on the rug. If a chair leg catches on the edge, the rug is too small.

Measure the table, then add 24 to 30 inches on every side. A 6-seat table of about 6 ft long usually needs an 8 x 10 ft rug. A longer table seats 8 and calls for a 9 x 12 ft rug.

Pick a low pile or flatweave. Food spills and chair movement are hard on thick wool. Short-pile Glaoui or flatweave styles hold up better than a plush Beni Ourain here.

Quick Measuring Tricks

  • Use painter’s tape. Mark the rug’s exact outline on the floor and live with it for a day.

  • Use newspaper. Lay sheets edge to edge to mimic the size and walk around it.

  • Measure the room twice. Include baseboards and door swings.

  • Check the product listing for the rug’s real dimensions. Handmade pieces vary, so trust the measurements, not the size label.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size rug should I get for my living room?
An 8 x 10 ft rug fits most medium living rooms, with at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs resting on it. Large rooms usually need a 9 x 12 ft rug.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?
Choose an 8 x 10 ft rug. It extends about 18 to 24 inches past each side of the bed and gives you a soft landing on both sides.

What size runner works best for a hallway?
Pick a runner that leaves 4 to 6 inches of bare floor on each side. A 2.5 x 8 ft runner fits many standard hallways, and a 3 x 10 ft runner suits longer ones.

How big should a dining room rug be?
Add 24 to 30 inches to each side of the table. Every chair leg should stay on the rug when someone pulls the chair back.

Should a Moroccan rug cover the entire floor?
No. Leave 6 to 12 inches of bare floor around the edges in most rooms. The border frames the rug and keeps the room from feeling closed in.
